There’s nothing more magical than an Irish garden. Today I had pleasure to visit the famous Mount Stewart House and Gardens, which was home to Charles, the 7th Marquess of Londonderry, and his wife Edith, Lady Londonderry. The house has remained in the family for over 250 years and is a splendid spot for having a spot of tea or a lovely walk amongst the beautiful flora and fauna.
I in particular enjoyed the gardens, even as a summer rainstorm descended and turned the bright spot into a mysterious, dripping paradise. Topiary animals and ships gallivant along the tops of large hedges and frogs take refuge in the free-flowing fountains and dripping pools dotting the landscape. Ancient mosses grow amongst the flagstones and sharp corners lead to interesting alcoves where one can imagine young lovers met in secret. It is a truly magnificent place and well worth a visit.
By itself the gardens were splendid, but Mount Stewart had more to offer in the way of Charles and Edith’s house on the hill. A recent renovation project has brought the house back to its former splendor, reflecting how it would have looked the years Edith and Charles lived. The house is full of the family’s treasures, including books, notes, vast paintings and dinner services fit for the many illustrious guests the family hosted over the years. Walking from room to room gives one the impression of walking through the gardens themselves. Each room is a different color and evokes a certain mood from its guests. The ruddy warmth of Edith’s Private Sitting Room is a lovely contrast from the eggshell blue of the Breakfast Room.
Together, the Gardens and House of Mount Stewart are a lovely, almost necessary addition to the lovely Northern Ireland landscape.
