I have seen some lovely buildings and castles while on my IFYE adventure in the UK. This week however, I saw perhaps one of the most spectacular human constructions of all—Lincoln Cathedral in Lincoln, England.
We elected to go on what they call the “roof tour” which gives an absolutely incredible peek-behind-the-curtain of one of England’s oldest buildings. We clattered around in the bell tower, climbed twisting narrow steps, crawled out onto the roof of the cathedral itself, and walked beneath wooden beams that have been in place since the 1200’s. Our tour guide also gave us incredible insight into the cathedral's past and present history. For example, someone must crawl into the rafters of the cathdral to raise and lower the chandelier for special services. In order to remain unseen, this masked man hangs out until the service is over...which can sometimes last several hours! But our tour guide assured us he doesn't get bored, as there is fantastic cell service so many stories above the ground.
It was an awe-inspiring and incredibly reverent place. Believers and non alike can find a sense of peace and wonder in the giant, breathless space that is Lincoln Cathedral.
